Provides a solid understanding of makeup basics,
As a photographer who only knows that makeup looks good when done right, this book is proving to be very helpful when working with other MUA’s (makeup artists). I event plan for many different photography events, and in the past I would wonder why the makeup work took so long. After talking with other MUA’s, and now in using this book, I can better plan for the time needed in order to have makeup done on set. Understanding the many nuances of what an MUA does has been very enlightening for me, and I have grown to appreciate with much more depth what they go through. You can’t rush good makeup. That is an axiom that will always be present. Just as a good image takes some time to pre-visualize and execute, the same goes for makeup. It is truly an art that will make or break a photo shoot. There are many amazing MUA’s out there who probably go uncredited for their work, and anyone who reads this book will keep them in the forefront of their photo projects. This book will help photographers, supporting artists, and other MUA’s to have a better understanding of the skill set needed to do the job right. Another hit from Focal Press, as they are leading the pack with selections that are of high value.

|Mastering both the Art and Science,
The best makeup artists have mastered both the art and the science of the craft. This comprehenisve book would do well as a primer for the student of makeup artistry. Covering everything from shape and proportions to aging and hair, this book provides step by step direction. There are many color photos and “recipes” as well as tips for pros. The resource section is comprehenisve.
This book is a great tool for students of the art. It is accessible and easy to understand. I am not a movie makeup artist but I have done theater and have become enamored of the makeup artist competition show Face Off. It is an entertaining read and will undoubtably inspire both novices and pros.

|Must Have For The Photographer or Filmmaker,
The Makeup Artist Handbook is a must have in the studio. As a photographer and filmmaker, makeup is a subject I barely ever paid attention to. I would hire someone in the field and I either liked what they did or not and had no idea why. This comprehensive, but not perfect guide, allows me to understand what and why these true artists actually do what they do.
This book covers just about any facet of makeup for film, photography, tv and stage. It is pretty much a textbook on techniques from basic beauty to advanced prosthetics. It doesn’t waste time and space on unneeded fluff. The layout of the book leaves a little bit to be desired though. Some illustrations are hard to tie in with the copy and I would like to have seen larger color plates of some of the processes but other than that it’s a must have on my shelf. Understanding face shapes and how certain colors and shadows can change a subject is invaluable now that I am aware of what I am looking at. The book really makes me want to try it myself on the next model I photograph or maybe even undertake a special effects makeup job on my next film.
I highly recommend this book for anyone curious, as well as for anyone involved, in any aspect of film and stage production. This was one of the best additions to my filmmaking library.

|Cheap and messy,
I bought this item for my 6-year-old daughter and I was incredibly disappointed in the packaging for the price you pay. The make-up is kept in a flimsy plastic package with no cover, so when your child has played with it, the powder from the make up gets everywhere and the crayons (which are really kind of shading art crayons -harder and thinner than regular wax crayons – think the shading sticks that came with “Fashion Plates” back in the 80s) they break very easily. I would rate the “fun factor” very low as well. It seems like it should be a cool thing, but it’s just not. Little girls would rather put make up on themselves and not on a piece of paper. Regrettable purchase that is not at all worth the money.

|Great Fun!!,
My 3 girls ages 4-8 loved playing with this set and we loved it so much that I came online to buy it for a gift for another little girl. I was surprised to see it did not have rave reviews! We all enjoyed this set! I did one too with my girls and we all had a blast with it. We easily popped out all the metal makup discs from the plastic so we could share them on the table between us and then put them back into the package when we were done to store it for next time. Maybe if you push on them while they are in the plastic you may have the problems that were mentioned in the other review?? It wasn’t an issue for us as they are easy to remove and replace when you are done. There are really a lot of blank faces to work with and the jewlery stickers were also fun. It sparked a lot of creativity, with them highlighting the hair, using different skin tones and drawing their own jewelry and accessories, it was great fun. They like that you put on the makeup “just like the real thing”. Great set for one or a group and would be fun for a wide variety of ages. It would be easily to use your own crayons or old eyeshadows/etc on them as well for a larger group.
